What is the Pleasure Craft Operator Card?

The Pleasure Craft Operator Card is proof of competency mandatory in Canada, which is required to operate a recreational boat. If you use any vessel which has a motor fitted to it, you will need this boat licence – even if the motor is not functional.

Obtaining a Pleasure Craft Operator Card

a. Enrol for the Online Course

To get a Pleasure Craft Operator Card boating licence, you must first take the online course. The course fees for is around $45 without applicable taxes, and you will have to complete the course within one year. You can invest three hours a day for the course, and you are required to complete quizzes. You must secure 85 percent in these quizzes to proceed ahead in the course.

b. Pass the Final Examination

Once you have completed the course, you are required to take the final examination for obtaining the boat licence in Toronto. The examination will include 50 questions at the end of which a result of 75 percent is required for successful completion. If you fail the first time, you can retake the test after 24 hours. However, if you fail the second time, you will have to do the online course all over again and reappear for the examination.

c. Get Your Card on Successful Completion

If you have passed the examination, you can print your temporary PCOC. The original document will reach you by post in 3-5 days. This boating licence in Ontario will help you sail across Canada without any worries!

Curriculum for PCOC Test

To secure this boat licence in Ontario, a candidate must first understand the basics of sailing and the Canadian regulations for sailing. Hence, the subjects included in the online course for the boating licence take the candidate deeply through concepts that will help him understand every aspect that will help him operate the boat responsibly and safely.

The curriculum offers an in-depth understanding of nautical terms, safety procedures and equipment required on the boat, use of Canadian buoys and the meaning of markers, etc. Besides this, the course will also take you through the rules for sharing waterways, safe boat operation, action needed during emergencies, fueling safety, loading and inspection of the craft, etc. Since safety is paramount, there is a detailed understanding offered about preparing for emergencies and safe navigation.
