School Bus Driver in Toronto

Aspects to Consider While Becoming a School Bus Driver in Toronto

1. Driving a Bus

Before you proceed further with selecting a career in school bus driving, you need to know how buses are different from each other and why there are different types of licenses for different types of buses.

The type of license will depend on the size of the bus and the number of passengers it carries.

2. License for School Bus – Class B and E

If you wish to drive a school bus on the roads of Ontario, you will either need a Class E or a Class B driving license.

What do these classes entail?

I. Class B License: The Class B license permits the license holder to drive a school bus that has seating of 24 or more passengers. It also covers different licenses for vehicles from C, D, E, F and G class.

II. Class E License: The Class E license permits the license holder to drive a school bus that has seating for less than 24 passengers. It also covers different licenses for vehicles from F and G class.

What are the Requirements to Get a Class B and E License?

To acquire a Class E or B license, you need to:

  • be 21 years old or older
  • have a valid Ontario license, other than the G and M Classes
  • pass a test for vision
  • present a valid medical report
  • complete a government assessment called the School Bus Driver Improvement Course (SBDIC)
  • clear a criminal record check
  • have less than 6 demerits on your current driving record
  • clear a knowledge test that checks your understanding about operating the trucks and the busses
  • pass a road test that meets the requirements of Class B and E

You will not be able to acquire a Class B or E license if your current license has been suspended in the past 12 months due to any offence as mentioned in the Official MTO handbook, issued for busses.

One thing that you need to absolutely remember is that not all the School Bus Driver Improvement courses are approved by the government. Before you choose a driving school in Toronto, try to check the courses by:

  • Checking the list of School Bus Driver Improvement Course provider or driving schools in Toronto that offer this course
  • Asking someone who is already working in the industry, for a reference of a driving school in Toronto
  • Checking the driving schools’ websites to see which course fits best to your requirements

3. Where to Apply?

For booking a test, you need to visit:

  • A DriveTest Center
  • The ServiceOntario College, situated in downtown Toronto

On your visit to these centers, bring in a valid identification that can act as a legal proof towards your date of birth, signature and legal name.

4. Study for the Knowledge Test

There is a handbook that can serve as a great material to study for the knowledge test. This handbook covers all the required driving skills and special regulations for bus drivers. To get the handbook, you can buy from:

  • any driving school in Toronto

  • online via ServiceOntario
