New to Ontario? > I am from another country
I have had a driver's licence for two years or more
If you have a driver's licence that is not from Japan, The United States or another Canadian province or territory and you have been driving for two years or more in the past three years, you can skip Level One and take the Level Two road test. If you pass this road test you will become a fully licensed driver.
You must bring the following items to any Ministry of Transportation, Driver Examination Centre. The addresses of the centres are listed in the blue pages of your local telephone book.
- proof of the date of your birth. You must be 16 years or older;
- a piece of personal identification that has your signature. Your record of landing from the Canada Immigration Centre is an example of acceptable proof of identification. There is a list of other acceptable pieces of identification in the Driver's Handbook;
- an original document in English or French to prove you have a driver's licence from the country where you were driving and show proof of how many years of driving experience you have.
All documents must be originals and they must be in English or French. You may only use photocopies if they are signed by a notary public. If the documents are in another language, they should be translated into English or French.
At the Driver Examination Centre, you must:
- pass a vision test to check your eyesight;
- pay the fee for a licence and the road test;
- pass a knowledge test on Ontario's laws of the road.
To get ready for the knowledge test, you can buy The Driver's Handbook from the Driver Examination Centre for a small fee. Read the handbook. Study Ontario's road signs and the laws of the road before you take the knowledge test.
The knowledge test is available in English, French, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Hindi, Finnish, German, Croatian, Punjabi and Korean at some Driver Examination Centres in Ontario. If you need the test in any of these languages, please check with your local Centre.
If the Centre does not have the knowledge test in your language, you can take the test with an interpreter. The interpreter cannot be a friend or family member. The Driver examination Centre will tell you who to contact to find a licensed interpreter. This interpretation service will cost some money.
If you pass the vision test and knowledge test, then you can make an appointment at the Driver Examination Centre to take your Level Two road test.
You must provide a car for the road test. During this test, the examiner will give you simple directions. The examiner will watch your driving to see if you are driving safely and following the rules of the road. You may not have an interpreter with you during the road test.
If you do not pass the road test, the staff at the Driver Examination Centre will tell you what to do next.
Once you have passed the Level Two road test, you will get a Class G Ontario driver's licence and you will be a fully licensed Ontario driver!
