New to Ontario? > I am from another country
I have had a driver's licence for less than one year
If you have a driver's licence that is not from Japan, the United States or another Canadian province or territory and you have been driving for less than one year in the past three years, then you must start with a Level One licence.
There are two levels in graduated licensing. It takes two years of driving experience before you can apply to get a full licence to drive a car, van or small truck in Ontario. However, the time that you have been driving in the country you had your licence will be part of those two years.
First, you must get a Level One licence. After you practice driving for a total of 12 months including you past experience - you can take a road test to get a Level Two licence. If you pass the road test, you must practise driving for another 12 months before you can take the second road test to get a full licence.
If you complete a recognized driver education course at a driving school, you can reduce the time you need in Level One to take the first road test by four months.
How do I get a Level One licence?
Bring the following items to any Ministry of Transportation, Driver Examination Centre. The addresses of these centers are listed in the blue pages of your local telephone book.
- proof of the date of your birth. You must be 16 years or older,
- a piece of personal identification that has your signature. Your record of landing from the Canada Immigration Centre is an example of acceptable proof of identification. There is a list of other acceptable pieces of identification in The Driver's Handbook.
- an original document in English or French to prove you have a driver's licence from the country where you were driving.
All documents must be originals and they must be in English or French. You may only use photocopies if they are signed by a notary public. If the documents are in another language, they should be translated into English or French.
At the Driver Examination Centre, you must:
- pass a vision test to check your eyesight;
- pass a knowledge test on Ontario's laws of the road;
- pay the fee for a licence and the first road test.
To get ready for the knowledge test, you can buy The Driver's Handbook from the Driver Examination Centre for a small fee. Read the handbook. Study Ontario's road signs and the laws of the road before you take the knowledge test.
The knowledge test is available in English, French, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Hindi, Finnish, German, Croatian, Punjabi and Korean at some Driver Examination Centres in Ontario. If you need the test in any of these languages, please check with your local Centre.
If your local Centre does not have the knowledge test in your language, you can take the test with an interpreter. The interpreter cannot be a friend or a family member. The Driver Examination Centre will tell you who to contact to find a licensed interpreter. This interpretation service will cost some money.
If you pass the vision test, the knowledge test, and can show proof of your driving licence, then you will get a Level one licence.
You can now begin to practise driving in Ontario! You must follow all of the laws of Ontario's roads and the special rules of the level Once licence. These rules are in the "Ready for the road" booklet.
The Driver examination Centre will tell you how much time you need to practise driving so that you have a total of 12 months experience. This will depend on how long you were licensed to drive before you moved to Ontario.
Once your practice period is over, you can take the first road test to get a Level Two licence. After another 12 months of driving you can take the second road test. If you pass this road test you will get a Class G Ontario driver's licence and you will be a fully licensed Ontario driver!
