  New to Ontario? > New Drivers - I do not have a licence

If you do not have a driver's licence or if your licence from another area has been expired for more than three years, then you must start at the beginning of graduated licensing. There are two levels in graduated licensing. You must practise driving for two years before you can get a full licence to drive a car, van or small truck in Ontario.

First, you must get a Level One licence. After you practise driving for 12 months you can take a road test to get a Level Two licence. If you pass the road test, you have another 12 months to get driving experience before you can take a second road test to get a full driving licence.

If you complete a recognized driver education course at a driving school, then you can take the first road test after only eight months.

How do I get a Level One Licence?

Bring the following items to any Ministry of Transportation, Driver Examination Centre. The addresses of these centers are listed in the blue pages of your local telephone book.

  • proof of the date of your birth. You must be 16 years or older.

  • a piece of personal identification that has your signature. Your record of landing from the Canada Immigration Centre is an example of an acceptable proof of identification. There is a list of other acceptable pieces of identification in The Driver's Handbook.
All documents must be originals and they must be in English or French. You may only use photocopies if a notary public signs them. If the documents are in another language, they should be translated into English or French.

You must bring all of your documents to the Driver Examination Centre. At the Driver Examination Centre, you must:
  • pass a vision test to check your eyesight;

  • pass a knowledge test on Ontario's laws of the road;

  • pay the fee for a licence and the first road test.
To get ready for the knowledge test, you can buy The Driver's Handbook from the Driver Examination Centre for a small fee. Read the handbook. Study Ontario's road signs and the laws of the road before you take the knowledge test.

The knowledge test is available in English, French, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Hindi, Finnish, German, Croatian, Punjabi and Korean at some Driver Examination Centres in Ontario. If you need the test in any of these languages, please check with your local Centre.

If the Centre does not have the knowledge test in your language, you can take the test with an interpreter. The interpreter cannot be a friend or a family member. The Driver Examination Centre will tell you who to contact to find a licensed interpreter. This interpretation service will cost some money.

When you pass the vision test and the knowledge test, you will get a Level one licence. You can begin to practise driving! You must follow all of the laws of Ontario's roads and the special rules of the Level One licence. These rules are in the "Ready for the road" booklet.

After you practise driving for 12 months, you can take your first road test to get a Level Two licence. After another 12 months of driving you can take your second road test. If you pass this road test you will get a Class G Ontario driver's licence and you will be a fully licensed Ontario driver!
